Would you Know?
The Control
decision

Accidents have a habit of happening where and when we least expect them, in the home, at work, in the street or on the road.

Neither the Air Ambulance nor a road ambulance can respond to an emergency situation with trained staff until they have been notified of the incident. Because of this, a period of time may well elapse when patient
care could be placed in the hands of an ordinary member of the public, a person like any one of us who may have little or no knowledge of first aid. If you were that person, could you cope? Would you know what to do, or just as important, what NOT to do possibly save someone's life?

• REMAIN CALM

• KEEP CONTROL

• TAKE A MOMENT
TO THINK

Here is some brief and basic first aid advice which can be used to help the patient until expert assistance arrives.

First aid begins before any "hands-on" contact is made with in injured person. The way you approach the matter and the immediate steps you take to maintain a safe area roundabout can all contribute to the patient's eventual well being.
When faced with an emergency lots of things may demand your attention at the same time. Do not attempt to do everything at once, but try to form in your mind a plan of action which will ensure that you don't get side tracked onto non-important issues. Remain calm, keep control of yourself and take a moment to think before acting.See whether there are any potential hazards, either to the patient or yourself. Is anyone's life in immediate danger? Is there anyone around who can help me? What specialised assistance do I need?
