Schools
Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is often contacted by schools and colleges.
We hope the answers below to the FAQ’s that we are often asked will help if you are a member of staff or a pupil in a local school.
Will a paramedic come and talk to us as well?
Sometimes. Their first and primary job is to work as a paramedic and they all do this as a full time job. However they do try and help the charity, and whenever possible one of them will come and talk to students about their work.
Can you bring the helicopter to our school?
In principle bringing the helicopter to your school may be possible. It will depend on a lot of different things, some of which are listed here:
The cost, against how much fundraising or sponsorship your school or college has raised. Your school and our charity will want to direct your fundraising to saving lives, so how much it costs to fly the helicopter to your school plays a big part in any decision.
A number of special written permissions which have to be obtained by the charity, and which sometimes includes a site survey of the proposed landing area, together with proper risk assessments and an organised plan.
The understanding that the helicopter is an emergency vehicle, essentially a flying ambulance, and that it may, at the very last minute, have to abandon its visit to your school or college, in order to attend an emergency, or even that it may have to leave before anyone or everyone has had a chance to take a look.
Can students do work experience at the charity office?
Yes, charities employ people with a wide range of skills and abilities. If you have an interest in web design, IT, marketing, media skills, finance, data management, people management, office administration, voluntary sector, driving, high street retail, and many other career paths, you could find working in the third sector is for you.
Speak to your school or college careers advisor who will contact us for further information.
Can students do work experience on the helicopter or with the paramedics?
Unfortunately no. It is not possible to arrange insurance cover for this type of work experience. For further information about careers in the NHS, visit http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk
Can our school get involved in Cornwall Air Ambulance recycling schemes?
Yes, definitely, and right now especially our mobile phone recycling scheme. We can get money for your old phones, working or not. Imagine if you were able to get every family in your school to send in an old phone.......you can help us raise a lot of money, with very little effort.
Will the charity come and give a talk to our pupils/students?
Yes we will, and regardless of whether or not you do fundraising for us. Our talks are free, and we can tailor them to suit any key stage, through to careers fairs for school and college leavers. Sometimes our talk includes a quiz.
How do we go about getting a speaker and a slide show talk?
Telephone our head office on 01726 890444 or e mail
